OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - listening for specific information about a natural wonder; - writing a paragraph about a natural wonder. 1. Knowledge: - Vocabulary: lexical items related tothings in nature. - Grammar:must(n’t), should(n’t) 2. Competence: - Ss develop self-study, communication and collaboration, problem solving. - Ss improve their listening and writing skills in general; their ability of listening for specific information and writing a paragraph about a natural wonder in specific. 3. Quality: - Have the serious attitude to studying and the good relationship with friends. The love of learning English, hard working, honest, cooperative, sociable, good communication. II.TEACHING AIDS and MATERIALS: - Textbooks, projector, TV, laptop, mobile phones, sachmem.vn, pictures, III.TEACHING PROCEDURE: 1. ACTIVITY 1: WARM-UP: (7’) a) Aims: - To create a friendly and atmosphere in the class before the lesson. - To lead into the new lesson. b) Content: * Look at the pictures and name the places in the pictures • And ask Ss to guess the name of the destination: c) Product: Suggested answers: 1. Ha Long Bay 2. Hue 3. Hoan Kiem Lake 4. Mui Ne 5. Vung Tau 6. Sa Pa Guessing: HA LONG BAY d) Organization: - T sticks show the slide with the picture that was hidden. - T gradually unhide the picture while having the class to guess the name of the destination. 2. ACTIVITY 2: PRE- LISTENING (8’) a) Aims: - To set the context for the introductory part of listening lesson. - To build and stimulate Ss’ critical thinking skill, presentation skill, and communication skill. b) Content: Task 1: Work in groups. Discuss and answer the question. c) Product: Suggested answers: 1. Phu Quoc is a beautiful island in Viet Nam. 2. Tourists can enjoy many entertaining activities such as visiting the night market, sightseeing, visiting the Safari,... 3. The food in here is delicious and unique. d) Organization: - T asks students to work in groups of four to answer the question: “What do you know about Phu Quoc Island?” - T asks students to talk in Vietnamese (sometimes) if they do not have enough vocabulary in English. - T asks students to share what they have discussed to see what they know about Phu Quoc Island. 3. ACTIVITY 3: WHILE- LISTENING (10’) a) Aims: - To listen for the gist, listen for specific, and detailed information. b) Content: Task 2: True or false statements c) Product: Key: 1. T 2. F (It has beautiful beaches and green forest.) 3. T 4. F (Sailing and fishing are popular water sports.) 5. T d) Organization: - T plays the recording once or twice. - T asks students to listen and tick the answers. - T asks students to compare their answers with the prediction made previously. - T calls on some students to read aloud their answers and correct the false one(s). - T checks students’ answers as a class. - T asks Ss to listen again and fill in the blanks: 4. ACTIVITY 4: POST- LISTENING- WRITING SKILLS (10’) a) Aims: - To build and stimulate Ss’ not-taking skill, analytical thinking skill, critical thinking skill, presentation skill, and communication skill. - To build and stimulate Ss’ ideas for writing (in the process of brainstorming ideas). - To write a paragraph of about 50 words about a natural wonder. b) Content: - Analyzing the sample writing: - Outlining the writing: Task 4: Write a paragraph about 50 words about a travel attraction you know. c) Product: Analyzing the sample writing: Phu Quoc is a very beautiful island in Viet Nam. It is in Kien Giang. It has beautiful beaches and green forests. It also has resorts, hotels, and bars. The people here are friendly. Phu Quoc has an international airport, and travelling there is easy. Tourists can visit fishing villages, national parks, pagodas and temples. They also like to eat the seafood here. It is delicious. Sailing and fishing are popular water sports. You can buy interesting things at the markets on the island. Outlining the writing: Model paragraph: Phu Quoc is a very beautiful island in Viet Nam. It is in Kien Giang. It has beautiful beaches and green forests. It also has resorts, hotels, and bars. The people here are friendly. Phu Quoc has an international airport, and travelling there is easy. Tourists can visit fishing villages, national parks, pagodas and temples. They also like to eat the seafood here. It is delicious. Sailing and fishing are popular water sports. You can buy interesting things at the markets on the island. Teacher: What is special about it? Student: It’s one of the most famous natural wonders of Viet Nam and thousands of tourists visit it every year. Task 4: Suggested answers: Writing: I am writing about Ly Son island. It is a beautiful island in Quang Ngai province. And it’s not far from here .You can go there by ship . It is a pristine island with exotic seafood. Ly Son island is famous for its friendliness, long beautiful beaches, and being “the kingdom of garlic.” There you can enjoy great Vietnamese seafood; Especially King crab. You can go diving and swimming. You can join exciting activities. I think, you should have a visit to Ly Son. d) Organization: Analyzing the sample writing: - T asks Ss to read the sample of writing task. - Ss read aloud. - T explains some new words if necessary. - Ss listen to the T and take notes. Outlining the writing: - T shows a poster of a model writing to and asks Ss to look at the poster on the board. - Ss look at the poster. - T asks one student to read aloud. - Ss read aloud. - T asks Ss and explains by analyzing the sample writing with the T. (Task of table completion and finding the detailed outline). - T gives feedback, comments and correct answers. - Ss listen to the T. - T gives and explains the outline. - Ss listen to the T and take notes. Task 4: - T asks Ss to make an outline of the paragraph based on the structure in the previous tasks and steps. - T asks Ss to work individually to write the outline. - Ss work individually. - T asks students to work in groups of four, gives them a large piece of paper and asks them to write the full paragraph into the paper in 6 minutes. - T asks students to pay attention to punctuation, structures, word choice, linking words, etc. 5. ACTIVITY 5: CORRECTION AND FEEDBACK (8’) a) Aims: - To build and stimulate Ss’ writing skills through the activity of correction and feedback in Ss’ writing. - To help Ss become independent learners and be able to check their own products of writing skills. b) Content: Correction and feedback activity c) Product: Paragraph writing checklist Yes No No. Writing criteria checklist 1 The paragraph begins with a sentence that clearly states the topic 2 Every sentence in the body of the paragraph clearly supports the topic 3 The writer has used language appropriate for the topic 4 The closing sentence restates the main idea in the opening sentence 5 Transitions (links) between sentences are smooth and clear 6 The tone is appropriate and suited to the intended audience 7 The writer has checked punctuation for accuracy 8 The writer has checked all words for accuracy and spelling 9 Grammar is appropriate and accurate 10 The paragraph is interesting to read d) Organization: - T asks Ss to look at the writing checklist in the handouts of the lesson and read the checklist carefully. - Ss listen to the T and read the writing checklist. - T explains the writing checklist in details. - Ss listen to the T and take notes if necessary - T asks Ss to work in groups to check other Ss’ writing. - Ss work in groups. - T goes around to help Ss if necessary, notes down good ideas as well as errors in Ss’ writing. - T asks Ss to give comments on other Ss ‘writing. - T gives the comments and feedbacks, gives the common errors in Ss’ writing (T gives some general comments and write good ideas in one column and errors in another). - T asks the whole class to comment on the ideas and correct the errors. - T gives the suggested answers for the topic of writing task. - Ss listen to the T and take notes. 5.
